My oil pastels are an ongoing body of work I refer to collectively as a Visual Portrait Journal. Begun as an effort at discipline and use as a therapeutic tool, the Journal is now an avenue upon which I explore and visually chronicle my existence as a child, a woman, an artist. It is my search among the infinite possibilities of self-understanding, healing, growth, power, play, curiosity, and creativity. As with entries in most journals, these are noted with the time, date, month, day, and year of their “birth.” Initial pieces were very simple, taking only 15 minutes or less to complete. They soon became complex and time consuming. A slow and deliberate explosion of color and shape poured out of my soul. I was becoming more focused. It was agony. It was joy. I welcomed both and fell fully addicted to this invisible storehouse of MORA to which I, alone, had the keys. The significance of each piece may not always be clear to me, but my cosmic memory; my ancientness in womanhood knows it on a profound and powerful level. These feelings of connectedness, reflected back to me through the Journal, are sometimes more important than what I can actually see or verbalize.
